Celebrating the Winter Solstice

The winter solstice represents a time for rest and reflection. It’s the dark from which new life can finally emerge. Everything lies sleeping, a sacred time of rest before the awakening and the slow build towards longer days. In spirit it signifies the the sun “returning”, the daylight hours increasing and all living things waking and thriving.

For many, the winter solstice is a time to release and let go whatever no longer serves you. There is no coincidence that there are approximately 10 days from the winter solstice to the new year. The cleansing process establishes a foundation to allow new intentions to set in. Often times it extends over a week, 10 days, or longer.

Whatever your cleansing process is, take the time between now and the new year to clear, detox and reflect. Prepare yourself for the new year, and become clear on your intentions. Notice I said intentions and not resolutions!

Looking for ways to enhance your time of refection and release this winter solstice?

The third chakra, solar plexus, is our chakra to access the sun’s light. During this time, it is nice to honour the solar plexus. Use essential oils1 that support this chakra, blend with a carrier oil and rub on the belly area.

Smudging is a great way to clear and cleanse. This can be done traditionally by burning sage, cedar or palo santo. An alternative is to use a liquid smudge or smudge spray. I’ve created a blend with Chamomile floral water, Bergamot, Fennel, Opoponax and Juniper Berry essential oils.

Self-Massage is another great way to get things moving. Use essential oils2 that support lymph movement and circulation. Blend with a carrier oil and massage your whole body.

I’d like to note, the change of season from fall to winter can be a time of fatigue, melancholy and stress for some. It’s easy to get stuck in the darkness and we are commonly unable to see the light or believe that it will come. To stimulate and wake up our systems try using rosemary, peppermint, lemon, ginger, tea tree and cypress in your day to day products. Just a few drops can make a world of difference.

Have a happy winter solstice!

And as always, I am available if you have any questions about using essential oils safely and/or if you want a custom blend made just for you.

The following is an abbreviated excerpt of “A Celebration of Winter Solstice” from The Circle of Life by Joyce Rupp and Macrina Wiederkehr. I fell in love with this the first time I read it. Enjoy!

There is a tendency to want to hurry from autumn to spring, to avoid the long dark days that winter brings. Many people do not like constant days bereft of light and months filled with colder temperatures. They struggle with the bleakness of land and the emptiness of trees. Their eyes and hearts seek color. Their spirits tire of tasting the endless gray skies. There is great rejoicing in the thought that light and warmth will soon be filling more and more of each new day.

“But winter darkness has a positive side to it. As we gather to celebrate the first turn from winter to spring, we are invited to recognize and honor the beauty in the often unwanted season of winter. Let us invite our hearts to be glad for the courage winter proclaims. Let us be grateful for the wisdom winter brings in teaching us about the need for withdrawal as an essential part of renewal. Let us also encourage our spirits as Earth prepares to come forth from this time of withdrawal into a season filled with light.”

“The winter solstice celebrates the return of hope to our land as our planet experiences the first slow turn toward greater daylight. Soon we will welcome the return of the sun and the coming of springtime. As we do so, let us remember and embrace the positive, enriching aspects of winter’s darkness. Pause now to sit in silence in the darkness of this space. Let this space be a safe enclosure of creative gestation for you.
